Alberta Government Hwy 566 / QE II Overpass Announcement

CALGARY METROPOLITAN REGION, AB - Today, the Government of Alberta announced the Highway 566 / QE II Overpass Project. The Save Nose Creek Steering Committee and its supporters see the construction of this overpass as an opportunity for our leadership and developers to improve the impact and usability by going above and beyond the minimum requirements for crossing Nose Creek.

Save Nose Creek and its partners are advocating for a multi-municipal park system. Infrastructure projects like these can create massive barriers for nature and pedestrians. We see the Highway 566 / QE II Overpass as a MAKE or BREAK project for our plans for Provincial or National Urban Park that connect Calgary to Airdrie.

Design choices of this overpass will directly impact efforts to develop a green belt and bike path that provides efficient and freely accessible connections for communities between Calgary and Airdrie. Save Nose Creek wants to deter the temptation to cut costs using minimum standard culvert practices in favour of creating strategies that provide long-term community and environmental benefits.

We are calling on the Alberta Government and Rocky View County to make Nose Creek a focal point of this project and not an afterthought. Build the bridge over Nose Creek with room for a green-belt connector for nature and active-mode transportation.

Save Nose Creek is a community-led initiative advocating for the Biodiversity, Watershed,  History, and Community Green Space in the Nose Creek Valley.

Our three goals are:

  • Primary Goal - Provincial or National Urban Park Designation

  • Secondary Goal - Multi-Municipal Park System & Overall Creek Protection

  • Tertiary Goal - Give Nose Creek a Voice in Development and Infrastructure
